I'm seeing emacs lockup around 50% of the time when running M-x
compile - when it locks it's using 100% of the cpu and C-g doesn't
interrupt it

No, so far this bug appears to be fixed - thanks!

I saw Simon Marshall's bug report which looked similar - I had a very 
long line which was probably causing the problem.
