Message #5 received at submit <at> debbugs.gnu.org (full text, mbox):
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: gnus
Version: 5.110018
No Gnus v0.18
GNU Emacs 23.1.1 (x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.18.9)
of 2011-02-01 on x86-003.build.bos.redhat.com
GNUS is telling me...
323411774: INBOX
When I try to look in INBOX, GNUS consumes all available memory. There
should be maybe a couple hundred unread emails, tops.
I'm using a local dovecot imap server. Thunderbird seems to work OK
when I point it at my local dovecot.
Other groups served up by this same dovecot instance appear to be OK.
It's just INBOX that has this problem.
Thanks for your help!
AG

Sorry; Gnus doesn't support selecting groups that have extremely sparse
message ranges like that. If you `c' the group, you may be able to
enter it afterwards when new messages arrive, though.
Fixing this properly in Gnus is on the schedule for the next Gnus
release cycle, but that's not going to start any time soon.

Message #13 received at 8956 <at> debbugs.gnu.org (full text, mbox):
Hi Larse,
I don't see how GNUS is getting that huge range of messages though.
When I talk manually to the imap server, I see this...
. examine INBOX
* OK [CLOSED] Previous mailbox closed.
* FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft)
* OK [PERMANENTFLAGS ()] Read-only mailbox.
* 3665 EXISTS
* 1 RECENT
* OK [UNSEEN 3482] First unseen.
* OK [UIDVALIDITY 1306668776] UIDs valid
* OK [UIDNEXT 3669] Predicted next UID
* OK [HIGHESTMODSEQ 106] Highest
. OK [READ-ONLY] Select completed.
So I suspect that emacs/gnus is coming up with the crazy big message count on its own.
Thanks,
Anthony

Yes, that's odd. Does the message count fix itself if you `M-g' the
group?

Do you have any Gnus Agent or cache files for this group?

I'm not sure how to tell. I can delete ~/.newsrc* and still see the problem.
I'm not familiar with gnus-agent. How do I make sure it's not impacting this?
Thanks,
AG

I'm sorry; I was confused. I forgot that you were using Emacs 23. has
been completely rewritten for Emacs 24, and I think problems like these
have been fixed in Emacs 24.
