These .desktop files contain lots of unicode characters, so the crash
seems to indicate a bug in emacs unicode handling.  I could reproduce
this bug with an emacs compiled 2 or 3 days ago.  But after an update
desktop files can be opened normally again.

Could you try and see if the bug still occurs with current CVS?
