The problem is this:

  (if (eq (with-current-buffer buffer
	    (get major-mode 'mode-class))
	  'special)
      (progn
	(switch-to-buffer buffer)
	(message "Not using View mode because the major mode is special"))


`view-mode' refuses to switch itself on if the mode is special, and
Image mode is apparently special.

Is there any particular reason for `view-mode' to refuse to switch
itself on in special modes?
