*** Title
macOS dictation used to work with Emacs < 30.1

*** Description
In prior releases of Emacs for macOS, the native macOS dictation feature was available. The latest 30.1 release however does not provide this feature.

*** Environment
GNU Emacs 30.1 (build 2, aarch64-apple-darwin24.3.0, NS appkit-2575.40 Version 15.3.1 (Build 24D70)) of 2025-02-27
Darwin bingsu.local 24.3.0 Darwin Kernel Version 24.3.0: Thu Jan 2 20:24:16 PST 2025; root:xnu-11215.81.4~3/RELEASE_ARM64_T6000 arm64 arm Darwin

*** Steps to Reproduce
1. On macOS, enable Dictation in Settings.

   Settings > Keyboard > Dictation

Set the shortcut "Press Right Command Key Twice"

2. Launch GUI Emacs.

3. In GUI Emacs in a writeable buffer, press the right command key twice.

*** Expected Result

The cursor (point) should have a visual microphone indicator to show that dictation is enabled. At this point, the user can dictate to enter text in the buffer.

*** Actual Result

No microphone indicator is shown. The user can not dictate to enter text into the buffer.

The discussion with a few users who have the same experience can be seen
here
https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/1j4639s/osx_dictation_fails_with_emacs_301/

I have a feeling they were using the Mitsuharu Yamamoto "emacs-mac"
implementation and not GNU Emacs (looks like JD Smith is rejuvenating
emacs-mac with a 30.1 merge). I'm still awaiting more precise information
on which builds were being used and I pinged them again, today.

To clarify, all my reported behavior is with the GNU NS-variant of Emacs. macOS voice dictation worked for me in 29.4. It does not in 30.1.

I have not used the Yamamoto fork in over a year and it is not installed on my system.

All builds that I have been using have come from MacPorts package emacs-app. https://ports.macports.org/port/emacs-app/details/

Were you on Intel or ARM and which macOS version worked for Emacs 29.4? I
have Intel macOS 12.7.6 and dictation does not work with Emacs 29.4 for me
(or 30.1 or current master). It could be a configuration issue or
something else.

Do you still have your Emacs 29.4 binary that accepts macOS dictation?

Charles diligently included this in his first message. He's on ARM.

He's *now* on ARM but he didn't say on what platform he experienced Emacs
29.4 working. He quoted his platform for Emacs 30.1.

Both 29.4 and 30.1 were running on the same macOS ARM laptop.

Here is the uname -a on the macOS system running either version of GNU Emacs (29.4, 30.1) related to this issue.

Thank you. I'm trying to reproduce this myself. Did dictation using Emacs
ever work for you on older macOS versions? The macports Emacs seems to
have no special patches and builds the same sources I do. I do see
dictation works in Terminal.app. Dictation does not work in other terminal
emulators like kitty or wezterm. If I can help fix this, I will try.
It'll be way easier if I/we can reproduce a working experience...

Ship Mints -

To clarify I am only discussing usage of voice dictation when Emacs is run in GUI mode. The use case of using voice dictation through a terminal emulator would be the responsibility of the terminal emulator and _not_ Emacs.

Of course. If you can share any hints that would enable another Emacs
macOS GUI user to try dictation (my key is bound to fn and I press it
twice), I'm all ears. I guess I could check out 29.4 sources and build
from scratch rather than use the nix-based repeatable build I've been
using. But I'm not sure what that would accomplish. I'm willing to try.

I was able to reproduce functioning voice dictation with the 29.4 build from https://emacsformacosx.com/builds

Installing from https://emacsformacosx.com/emacs-builds/Emacs-29.4-universal.dmg

Attached is a video showing successful macOS voice dictation on Emacs 29.4 for macOS.

Got it. I see it does work for me. (I stopped using that distro last year
because it's slow and buggy in other ways.). That's perfect as I can try to
analyze it now. I'm curious, perhaps morbidly so.

Thank you for that. I also verified that his 30.1 build does not take
dictation, should it be a difference in compilation by the distro producers.

I'll dig this afternoon for a bit.

Charles, would you submit an issue to David Caldwell here
https://github.com/caldwell/build-emacs/issues and let him know dictation
works on his 29 but not his 30? He might be quicker at identifying the
issue since he has multiple toolchains available.

Making some progress. Definitely a toolchain issue and nothing to do with
Emacs source code, per se. I was able to build a 29.4 that accepts
dictation and working through getting a 30.1 to work. After that, I'll see
if I can work up some documentation and some recommendations.

I've gone ahead and done that so that David is aware and can assist with
the toolchain.
