Since switching from Emacs 23.1 to Emacs 23.2 on sparc-sun-solaris2.11
(OpenSolaris build 134), Emacs has become extremely unstable for me,
crashing several times a day sometimes.

I've tried to enable memory debugging with the Solaris libumem, but even
the otherwise stable Emacs 23.1 crashes immediately if libumem is in
use.  This suggests some sort of memory problem.  Unfortunately, I
cannot reproduce the problem: the crashes seem completely random and not
related to anything I do.

The problem may be due to a particular usage pattern, e.g. I'm using

(gnus-demon-add-handler 'gnus-demon-scan-news 5 nil)

in .gnus.el (and gnus in the first place).  When running emacs 23.2 on
my laptop (i386-pc-solaris2.11), though without gnus,, I've never seen
any crashes.

Unfortunately, even gdb 7.2 cannot properly deal with the corefiles:

Can you please try to reproduce the crash when you compile emacs-23.2 with -g -O0?

Also, can you please post the tweaks you needed for the trunk?  We'd
like it to compile out of the box.

An emacs 23.2 built with cc -g only crashed yesterday, so the problem
seems not to depend on optimization level.

Is the crash backtrace the same? (just making sure...)

Is the crash hard to reproduce?

Maybe the best bet is to try to isolate the change that caused the crash.
It's very likely that is due to a change in emacs/src/*

Could you try to bisect to find the bad change ?
(I'd try the git mirror, git bisect is very fast and reliable)

Yes.  I've even rebuild emacs 23.2 with gcc 4.4.2 -g -O2 for good
measure, and the crash is just the same.

Unfortunately yes: it usually takes a couple of hours to occur, and I
haven't yet found what triggers it.

I fear it's the only way.  With the current state of affairs, I cannot
give emacs 23.2 to hour users: an editor that crashes regularly is
unacceptable.

Before going that route, I may try to investigate the core dumps a
little bit more, perhaps I find something.  Unfortunately, even with the
gcc build, gdb cannot make sense of them and doesn't even produce a
backtrace.

Sure, although this will probably take weeks, given the amount of
change between 23.1 and 23.2.

I didn't even know that existed: last time I looked the cvs mirror was
gone due to unreliablity, so I had to build/learn bzr to checkout the
current version.

Does gdb have problems even when you build with gcc -g -O0?
BTW, the best is to run emacs under gdb, and do it from the src
subdirectory, so that gdb can read the .gdbinit file in there.

One wild guess: maybe gdb has problems because on solaris10 unexsol.c
is used for dumping, not unexelf.c.
Maybe you could try removing the 2 lines in emacs/src/s/sol2-10.h that refer to UNEXEC...

Unfortunately, the git mirror is completely out of date.  The last
changes are from december 2009, way before the 23.2 release ;-(

There is a bzr bisect plugin, though, which should be usable instead.

When I really want to debug something, I use -g3 -O0 instead.  But I've
no idea if I've got a chance to debug the apparent memory corruption
causing this.  I'll have to check etc/DEBUG for suggestions.

Sorry, I didn't even know about the mirror on savannah.  This one:
 git://repo.or.cz/emacs.git
is up to date.

While I didn't get around to reghunting the culprit change between 23.1
and 23.2, I've now upgraded to 23.3 and haven't seen a single crash
since.  So unless the issue still exists in Emacs 24, I'd say it is
fixed.
