Sorry for the delay. The problem is due to hi-lock-process-phrase, which
tries to do various transformations on interactive input. I've tried to
improve it, so it now handles your example. But I think it might be
better to just get rid of it altogether (and use case-fold-search and
search-spaces-regexp instead).
