I spoke too fast: this was with ‘--no-grafts’; building with grafts
enabled yields a system with fonts that works just fine.

So I assume we have a graft somewhere that fixes something important,
probably the ‘fontconfig’ replacement Marius added in
ab9de8cfb0525ef43668712ac898707f97f9a620.
