The problem is gone with another pull and compilation, you can close
it.

Perhaps this was not the result of a change in Emacs but of an error
on my side---I remember I had this problem before.  I don't know how
to reproduce it, though.

Under what circumstances can this error occur?  I could then try to
avoid it in the future.
