A more logical place would be in the same place where errors
are displayed by compilation-mode, i.e. mode-line-process indeed.
From compile.el:

              (setq mode-line-process
                    '((:propertize ":%s" face compilation-mode-line-run)
                      compilation-mode-line-errors))
