Dear all,

This is a very difficult to reproduce crash. It happens quite scarcely,
but fortunately, knowing its existence I was running under the
debugger. Please note that it was w/o the -Q option, and my init file is
quite a few lines ;-). Here is the gdb log:

I hope that this can help. Anyway, the debug session is still running,
please feel free to ask for anything. But do not expect that I can
easilly reproduce it, it happens after hours running.

The crashing version is the development version from which I am sending
this report.

BR,

  Vincent.

I think I have seen a similar crash with the emacs-25 branch as well,
but only once, and I couldn't reproduce it so far.

Andreas.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, backtraces from optimized builds, even those with -Og
switch, are not reliable enough. So when you know about an existing
problem that is hard to reproduce, please run an unoptimized version
if you can.

Nevertheless, let's see if we can glean anything useful from this
crash. Please show the output of these GDB commands:

  (gdb) p PT_ADDR
  (gdb) p GPT_ADDR
  (gdb) p GPT

If my reading of the code is correct, we have pointers to buffer text
and the gap lying around, while invoking code that can GC (which
compacts buffers). For example, the sequence of calls

   SETUP_SYNTAX_TABLE
    -> SETUP_BUFFER_SYNTAX_TABLE
        -> update_syntax_table_forward
           -> parse_sexp_propertize

could call Lisp, and that happens after we already computed the values
of p, endp, and stop. Likewise the call to UPDATE_SYNTAX_TABLE_FORWARD
we make inside the loop.

If GC decides to compact the gap, it could well make a previously
valid pointer invalid.

Could that be the reason?

Yes, that looks very likely.

Here you are:

--8<----8<----8<----8<----8<-- begin -->8---->8---->8---->8---->8----
(gdb) p PT_ADDR
$1 = (unsigned char *) 0x521073e " long as we don't have any longer the \\NEWLINE the problem is solved. So it could be:\n\n\n\n--8<----8<----8<----8<----8<-- begin -->8---->8---->8---->8---->8----\n  in_input_funnies=`echo \"$in_input\" \\\n  "...

(gdb) p GPT
$3 = 1651

The PT_ADDR seems to be pointing at the content of an email that I was
editing when the crash occurred --- fortunately nothing confidential

spaces in filenames. If you are interested the thread is titled:

I have also attached a screen capture of crashed Emacs, that may help
you see what the content of the edited buffer was when the crash
occurred. It seems that the crash occurred while I was editing the
sentence « So it could be: ... ».

Thanks to all for the bug report and followup investigation. There is a
clear bug in skip_syntaxes in Emacs 25, which the attached patch should fix.

Eli, OK to install this into emacs-25? If not, I can install it into master.

Not exactly what I expected, which might mean my theory about the
crash reasons is incorrect (although the code is still unsafe).

PT_ADDR is the address of point in buffer text, so you were editing
the sentence where it points, i.e. the sentence before that.

It should go to the release branch.

However, isn't this just part of the problem? What about the call to
UPDATE_SYNTAX_TABLE_FORWARD? It can also call Lisp. Or are you
saying that the bug is unrelated to GC while the loop in skip_syntaxes
is running?

Thanks.

Ouch, I misread the surrounding code as ifs not whiles. You're right,
the patch fixes only a small part of the problem. I'll look into
generalizing it, for master.

I think we need to fix the rest on the release branch as well. Such
problems always mean Emacs will segfault, and I don't think we want to
release with such a problem.

Thanks.

Ah, sorry, I got confused by the phrase "release branch", and thought the phrase
referred to master instead of to emacs-25. Anyway, attached is a revised patch

Thanks, this looks good to me. The only issue left is with a similar
code in the non-forwardp branch -- don't we want to fix that as well?

OK, thanks, I installed it into emacs-25 and merged it into master and
am boldly marking the bug as done.

I left the non-forwardp branch alone because it calls
UPDATE_SYNTAX_TABLE_BACKWARD, which in turn can call
update_syntax_table, which (unlike update_syntax_table_forward) does not
call parse_sexp_propertize and so I don't see how the garbage collector
can trigger.

Thank you,

Just for the sake of completeness, please note that I got some error
return on gdb quitting, like this:

--8<----8<----8<----8<----8<-- begin -->8---->8---->8---->8---->8----
(gdb) quit
A debugging session is active.

	Inferior 1 [process 9928] will be killed.

Quit anyway? (y or n) [answered Y; input not from terminal]
error return ../../gdb-7.6.1/gdb/windows-nat.c:1275 was 5
--8<----8<----8<----8<----8<--  end  -->8---->8---->8---->8---->8----

VBR,
	Vincent.

PS: the « [answered Y; input not from terminal] » is because I had
launched gdb from an Emacs shell, to make easier cut & paste.

This is a known problem that is fixed in a later version of GDB; I
suggest to upgrade.
