I started to use it ~ 1 year ago.

I want to recall that the manual says that this function
returns _always_ a string:
Return the @var{thing} around or next to point, as a string.
(see at: doc/lispref/text.texi (Buffer Contents)

But as you know, that is not true if
(get thing 'thing-at-point)

returns a non-nil value.
