in previous versions of rmail mode the labels were displayed in the
line at the bottom of the window after the mode name, and current
message and number of messages. There is no such label display now.

This appears to be a problem with your own code, not with rmail.
Obviously, you will have to update your code for the new rmail mbox code.
> search-forward(",,")
> rmail-make-summary-line-1(1)
There is no such function in rmail any more.
> rmail-make-summary-line(1)
There is no such function in rmail any more.

You have advised this function.

Message #15 received at 2074 <at> emacsbugs.donarmstrong.com (full text, mbox):
Thank you -- I found I had copied rmailsum.el when my mail file went
over 10000 messages and the summary could not cope.
However it still does not do what the previous summary did -- it
does not display labels in {} as previously. I also note that rmail
mode no longer displays labels on the bottom line.
I cannot see how to continue; not every machine I use has the
rmail-mbox format and this makes moving form home to work will be next
to impossible, and without working labels I cannot handle mail
Version of 2008-06-07 with -q reading mail

Version of 2009-01-27 with -q reading mail

This is the same file, loaded and h typed. You will see labels in teh
first and not in the second

Yes, I'm afraid the label handling is rather broken at present, as
reported in bug#2069.
You may wish to use an older version until trunk rmail settles down.
Merged 2069 2074.

When I type `a foobar RET', `foobar' appears in the mode line.
It works also if I move away to another message and move back,
and if I save the file and visit it again.

But the display of labels in the relevant line in the summary buffer,
{ likethis }, seems broken.
