Subject: 24.3; Odd vertical height of some glyphs in certain fonts
Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2013 09:15:40 +0100
If I set variable-pitch-face to Droid Serif, the right arrow → is much
taller than most other glyphs, effectively forcing extra space after
lines containing it. In DejaVu Serif, this does not happen.

This effect is visible with several other fonts as well: with Calibri,
it does not happen, whereas with Cambria it does, as well as with
Verdana, Ubuntu and Georgia.

In LibreOffice and GEdit this problem does not occur.

Are you sure that your Emacs is using the Droid Serif font
for "→"? I've just installed the droid-ttf package
(ubuntu), but the installed Droid Sefif font:

  /usr/share/fonts/truetype/droid/DroidSerif-Regular.ttf

does not contain a glyph for → (U+2192), so Emacs uses some
other automatically found font for that character. Please
check which font is used for → in your Emacs by putting
cursor on that character and type C-u C-x =. If you do find
that your Emacs is using the Droid Serif font, could you
please send me that font?

> In LibreOffice and GEdit this problem does not occur.

There's a possibility that they find a better alternative
font than what Emacs finds.

The font being used is:

    xft:-unknown-Asana Math-normal-normal-normal-*-14-*-*-*-*-0-iso10646-1
(#x1D5)

The glyph is shown with the correct baseline, but a large descender space
(the entire glyph appears to sit above the baseline). Normally, Emacs only
makes the line taller when there's a glyph which actually needs the space.

Hello,

This bug is still reproducible in 24.5 with Deja Vu Sans Mono. All
Unicode chars with "MATH DELTA" in them, for instance #x1d7ad, are
padded with vertical space to roughly x7 the usual height.

regards,
Oleh

I tried this on Debian with Emacs 27:

(insert #x1d7ad)
=> 𝞭

I get this font, though:

    xfthb:-PfEd-Unifont Upper-normal-normal-normal-*-25-*-*-*-d-0-iso10646-1 (#x1BD6)

Are you still seeing these font glitches?
