I did get one answer back from someone who
was at Bell Labs's system group during the
late 1970s, and who worked closely with one of
the well-known Unix names, writing code.
He wrote: "I always thought it just meant list.
I don't think the question ever came up during
the year I was at Bell Labs, so I don't
know what everyone else thought it meant."
