Note that a system theme should take lower precedence than a color theme loaded via M-x load-theme. So even if this background color comes from a system theme, we still have a bug. OTOH if this background color comes from a setting of your (e.g. via customize), then it's normal since the user theme takes precedence over all other themes. There is something wrong with the (set-background-color "color-here") function. This is a regression from emacs 23.3 where that function works fine on the same machine. I tried (set-background-color "black") and this function seems very erratic. It will succeed part way (not for all lines on buffer), but then fail to set the color back to white on the next call. Assuming that load-theme uses this function, I think this is probably where the bug is. I tried launching emacs with emacs --background-color=black, and that succeeds in making the background color black. This is run under emacs -Q. I tried doing a git pull and recompiling everything just to be sure it's not already fixed. I'm running under Arch Linux on XFCE. I followed the output of the ./configure script, and it seems I am building against GTK2 libraries. I'll experiment a bit and see if I can narrow down the problem further. I'm adding the diagnostic information from report-emacs-bug below. I was having trouble sending via report-emacs-bug method directly, as it didn't seem to like my smtp server. Can you show a screenshot with such erratic results? set-background-color only sets the background color of the default face, so if the buffer shows portions of the text with faces other than different that specify the background color, set-background-color will not change the background for those portions of text. But just for the first set-background-color call. There seems to be some error in the face/frame interaction. This is = what happens for me: (set-background-color "black") (set-frame-parameter "background" "black") ... x_set_background_color ("black") update_face_from_frame_parameter (f, Qbackground_color, arg); ... (frame-set-background-mode) ... (face-spec-recalc) ... (set-frame-parameter "background" "white") So the background is first black and then white again. It seems that = redisplay uses the GC with background black, but as the window = background is white, those parts not redrawn (i.e. without text) are = white. I don't know why this is only seen with XFCE and just for the first = set-background-color call. Jan D. The theme-face is coming from `font-setting-change-default-font' in dynamic-settings.el: (let ((spec (list (list t (face-attr-construct 'default))))) (progn (put 'default 'customized-face spec) (custom-push-theme 'theme-face 'default 'user 'set spec) (put 'default 'face-modified nil)))))) As this function is written, it's not going to play nicely with the Customize or Custom themes code. The reason this bug triggered under XFCE is that XFCE sends Emacs a `font-render' config event, and a font-setting-change-default-font bug caused the default face to be modified even with font-use-system-font nil. This patch doesn't address the broader problem, noted in my previous message: when font-use-system-font is non-nil, the way font-setting-change-default-font uses custom-push-theme will likely interefere with the user's own Custom settings and/or Custom themes. I think that instead of using custom-push-theme, font-setting-change-default-font should set a `font' frame parameter in window-system-default-frame-alist.
