...if the thread is currently hidden.  I can't imagine anyone wants to
do `A T' and see no change in the summary buffer, but that's what
happens for me.

Do you have a test case for this?  If I `A T' on a hidden thread, it's
displayed.

I think you have to 

  (setq gnus-thread-hide-subtree t) 

to see this behavior.
