Interesting... now *that* would make an informative error message! How about changing it to something based on what you wrote above? Hmm, I was not using any kind of creative limit=81\it would have been one of the built-in options (perhaps `/ A' ?) Maybe this means the default for nnmail-extra-headers is wrong. Shouldn't the built-in queries work out-of-the-box? >> Near as I can tell by trolling through the info manual, this variable >> has something to do with making information available to summary line >> display, but if that's the case, it's hardly obvious from its docstring, >> which is simply "Extra headers to parse." If Gnus is parsing something it is naturally going to be for programmatic consumption. Maybe you want to say something about what kinds of things Gnus might do with that information (e.g. limit). --=20 Dave Abrahams BoostPro Computing http://www.boostpro.com From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Fri Aug 19 02:56:06 2011 Received: (at 9302) by debbugs.gnu.org; 19 Aug 2011 06:56:06 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1QuIzu-0007aJ-6r for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 19 Aug 2011 02:56:06 -0400 Received: from mail.uni-ulm.de ([134.60.1.11]) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1QuIzo-0007Zq-2l for 9302@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 19 Aug 2011 02:56:02 -0400 Received: from bridgekeeper.physik.uni-ulm.de (bridgekeeper.physik.uni-ulm.de [134.60.10.175]) by mail.uni-ulm.de (8.14.3/8.14.2) with ESMTP id p7J6rqqR029167; Fri, 19 Aug 2011 08:53:52 +0200 (MEST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by bridgekeeper.physik.uni-ulm.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id DB70910C8C; Fri, 19 Aug 2011 08:53:51 +0200 (CEST) From: Reiner Steib To: Dave Abrahams , 9302@debbugs.gnu.org Subject: Re: bug#9302: nmail-extra-headers too mysterious References: X-Face: #vK]N[`vqjuod*|)'[iD7/"3AB-ApT%fmN"LWAg@oS7OesGv~)n[OBTLM#I="J'Y^-7I I/ps7o_'IK@#-Rs{::DZ@O8yS|fexe,XslY[:dNWOb~>?mC-&i_c)say:"\IpA.5U.b]'NY; Pks{lb h.+#6%DpZuaK3dcHB`Av3zc:r!C%~s0&m, tWj]&}, qg.+0ww2gK%f!:GK|wMl.I!(voY*1"^li8"~B BNG)9LvPi?^DMR-GVDnZqhu*3Hi, +g=wFhI)BL6&u{EOVEHjVEVq~d?_}lMntWAc3(6?kftjc>_f>! g0wM(qPM$d5]^TT_Qyi&L?LGVG)SHN;Gk/,pkY9,~ Date: Fri, 19 Aug 2011 08:53:48 +0200 In-Reply-To: (Dave Abrahams's message of "Thu, 18 Aug 2011 04:55:09 -0400") Message-ID: <87sjoxops3.fsf@marauder.physik.uni-ulm.de> User-Agent: Gnus/5.13 (Gnus v5.13) Emacs/23.1 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-DCC-wuwien-Metrics: poseidon 1290; Body=3 Fuz1=3 Fuz2=3 X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new X-Spam-Score: -2.3 (--) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 9302 Cc: bugs@gnus.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.11 Precedence: list Reply-To: Reiner Steib List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -2.3 (--) On Thu, Aug 18 2011, Dave Abrahams wrote: > Hmm, I was not using any kind of creative limit=E2=80=94it would have bee= n one > of the built-in options (perhaps `/ A' ?) `gnus-summary-limit-to-address' or `gnus-summary-limit-to-recipient'. > Maybe this means the default for nnmail-extra-headers is wrong. > Shouldn't the built-in queries work out-of-the-box? "What to twiddle" is perfectly clear, but "what functionality generated the message" isn't. My point is that: * We have a command `gnus-summary-limit-to-address' that won't function correctly in Gnus' default configuration * It generates a warning about a variable whose connection to the problem is non-obvious from its documentation (BTW, what's the difference between gnus-extra-headers and nnmail-extra-headers?) * The warning is easy to miss I feel like I just got lucky and noticed that my configuration was wrong, but wasn't given the tools to understand how the configuration should have been set up to begin with. OK, again I am left wondering when this transfer happens for what purpose gnus will use these headers. Clearly(?) limiting is not using gnus-extra-headers and only using the nnmail-extra-headers... so there's some other purpose? >> I feel like I just got lucky and noticed that my configuration was >> wrong, but wasn't given the tools to understand how the configuration >> should have been set up to begin with. You must have misunderstood me; let me try again. Why not modify `gnus-summary-limit-to-address' so that it checks immediately whether "to" and "cc" are in the appropriate -extra-headers variables and if not, asks the user whether s/he wants to include them (and if necessary, re-fetch headers or whatever else Gnus needs to do to make this command work properly)? That sort of prompt wouldn't slip by unnoticed the same way a warning would. -- Dave Abrahams BoostPro Computing http://www.boostpro.com From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sun Sep 11 17:03:56 2011 Received: (at 9302) by debbugs.gnu.org; 11 Sep 2011 21:03:56 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1R2rBz-0002OW-Ns for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 11 Sep 2011 17:03:56 -0400 Received: from hermes.netfonds.no ([80.91.224.195]) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1R2rBx-0002OJ-HM for 9302@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 11 Sep 2011 17:03:54 -0400 Received: from cm-84.215.51.58.getinternet.no ([84.215.51.58] helo=stories.gnus.org) by hermes.netfonds.no with esmtpsa (TLS1.0:DHE_RSA_AES_128_CBC_SHA1:16) (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1R2r7h-0000Tx-Pb; Sun, 11 Sep 2011 22:59:29 +0200 From: Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen To: Dave Abrahams Subject: Re: bug#9302: nmail-extra-headers too mysterious In-Reply-To: (Dave Abrahams's message of "Sun, 11 Sep 2011 13:11:57 -0400") Date: Sun, 11 Sep 2011 22:51:28 +0200 Message-ID: References: User-Agent: Gnus/5.110018 (No Gnus v0.18) Emacs/24.0.50 (gnu/linux) Face: iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAADAAAAAwBAMAAAClLOS0AAAAD1BMVEURCAYtFhENBAOIYEkZ DAq/LWcbAAACU0lEQVQ4jU1UgZEjIQzz8hSwPlwA8VNAOK4AzLv/ml6G7M/vTDYZBJYsi9DA03kM cfYyEjMnK1ihcZ6fu7tbTxcQLLs9ALNlr0spdotnf4DRRWuaFw8hE/MHwD4nrVz4s/4BQM7kxux5 f7ELHYL4MM88KccPsDwAO0tSSgeQU6r3Mt4vwaoTEerg2XL76KX/fNWcbw8A++30UTrzO9XLfJJ7 QavOaChI5GKql0QRRt9xgndz6/f4brEsHKLDEgPzkPRrfF+yeXcXxuC6Rp/pz/jJBo8o7xMA8v1C EwB6C+4AcAocDajYglkNPgFw2abQuiFcJiQ0kUQ0Hdq5d5BjFLIKfvoEQLEdDYP8i20mlAJBlGIJ twZlaagFYMxF5Pm4C46KFLAogBvrx/buhamZfE68c96lNgWTviomFCfeMWm4i+0FpRJkyKpFooUj apTgIBzgr5bqqgAyWSmH/A7TVtN8UzsM3DegeNlCct6qpM3CodhLIHZX1fKuWhW2mPkBFqIEgL/x 0sjm6ZFUa0sP8DrKojrkoQUkqgCohjBkx0gQOCh0RC2PnyhVA/CdxNQy3mpDcmqOe+AxJywZRiQz YXy8HQFLTP1ElG9VhD9avikmHsAVwFIMZVINryJBEep9BRY6lj3YKLUfGrirPWlEJADMF3EM4DiG MWKACu3knxOKspZjjHChRnweAF0tmBGCHoYtF15fMhXGTezPMMTNt6qZIDsmunPl/0q5vgrv1Pyn FcLoT8iSXQrMB8B9iHve8c9j+9bPDzVuzvPPsAPw2b33+F/1LZm4i8hwSgAAAABJRU5ErkJggg== X-Now-Playing: Scout Niblett's _This Fool Can Die Now_: "Your Last Chariot" MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-MailScanner-ID: 1R2r7h-0000Tx-Pb X-Netfonds-MailScanner: Found to be clean X-Netfonds-MailScanner-From: larsi@gnus.org MailScanner-NULL-Check: 1316379569.88975@DgmhhslV1JWAhcnjAQQMhg X-Spam-Status: No X-Spam-Score: -2.7 (--) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 9302 Cc: 9302@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.11 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -2.7 (--) Dave Abrahams writes: > Why not modify `gnus-summary-limit-to-address' so that it checks > immediately whether "to" and "cc" are in the appropriate -extra-headers > variables and if not, asks the user whether s/he wants to include them > (and if necessary, re-fetch headers or whatever else Gnus needs to do to > make this command work properly)?
