Oh, now I see: the pinentry window completely confused me as it was not particularly verbose concerning the context of its appearence. It simply asked "Enter passphrase", but it did not say how the passphrase would be used. -- This is something that has annoyed me various times, but it is really not (not only) an emacs issue, but it applies also to gpg. ...Well, it would be nice if either gpg or emacs could tell the user that the file the user wants to save is just about to go through symmetric encryption (and not any other encryption mechanism the user might hope for). Otherwise, any misunderstanding concerning the encryption mechanism could imply that a file is essentially lost after saving. Right, but some people (Ted and Lars at least) feel the behavior too verbose. Maybe pinentry could be improved to display what gpg will do. Actually I sometimes use gnome-keyring-daemon's gpg-agent support, which displays two passphrase entries for confirmation and that implies symmetric encryption. I strongly disagree in the sense that I find the current default behavior to brief. Ted, Lars, and also I myself, we can always customize things to make the behavior more brief and geared towards our personal needs. But making the brief behavior the default, assuming that the average user understands all this things, in my opinion is asking for trouble and confusion. Should I file another bug report for this?
