Subject: bug#8798: 23.2: graphical Emacs chooses Bold-Italic when regular monospace font chosen

When a true four-font (upright,italic,bold,bold-italic) monospace
typeface is chosen using the menus:

Options--> Set Default Font--> "UbuntuBeta Mono, regular"

then graphical Emacs always chooses the bold-italic variant.
See screenshot at:

  https://launchpadlibrarian.net/72772004/emacs-UbuntuFontMonoSpace.png

M-x describe-font shows:

  name (opened by): -unknown-UbuntuBeta Mono-normal-normal-normal-*-37-*-*-*-m-0-iso10646-1
       full name: UbuntuBeta Mono:pixelsize=37:foundry=unknown:weight=normal:slant=normal:width=normal:spacing=100:scalable=true

although this shows 'normal' for both weight and slant; the
bold+italic form is being drawn. Note that no synthesis is
occuring; it is the genuine bold-italic that is being loaded.
