Hi,
=A0
I need to know what is the rationale behind this behavior ?
=A0
> cp aa bb
aa does not exist and neither does bb.=A0No warning is thrown on perfo= rming this operation.
=A0
However,
if I do
=A0
> cp dd cc
where cc is a non empty file, then a warning is thrown about the sourc= e file being empty| invalid.
This is the warning thrown.
=A0
cp: cannot stat `dd': No such file or directory

=A0
Can I please know the rationale behind this behavior?

Most likely, you are mistaken, and 'aa' _did_ indeed exist. cp _always_ warns about a missing source file. But to know that for sure, it would help to see a complete trace of your shell session where you were testing, including ls output along the way, where you claim to reproduce the problem. It may also help your debugging to try 'type cp' to make sure there aren't any shell functions or aliases interfering with normal operation, as well as use 'set -vx' prior to cp to see what the shell really did run. Also, 'cp -v' makes cp more verbose about what it did and tried. --=20 Eric Blake eblake@redhat.com +1-801-349-2682 Libvirt virtualization library http://libvirt.org --------------enig2E9B429B27882FB3C9756BF2 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Public key at http://people.redhat.com/eblake/eblake.gpg Comment: Using GnuPG with Fedora - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQEcBAEBCAAGBQJNlgsnAAoJEKeha0olJ0Nq3YIH/0QuCTgCxTEjI9NefFWb2m5w n/9VyGUPY0jiWn2KOVRn/LR0NwnAtDlOSegTeIiMgb6DLqom4LHXmfKzcOL7PUXv Cg5/pz6l5gjVsBL5bi+MtVcPyX12TNXpW0vRJilwMZLEy+Idka3lOu2OCZ2TFNbj Jy4CjNcrbSW5MICRU+fcZQ1rXzZDwPzC/p5B4ppAb1wWNrtSQ/sNQUw7eFsDeRHn toI/Xa/ujxZP5j4Fbg7YWaJeVZnqFkV0s9GfoOYM92ZTsVPwN26O4csG28Y+t8ta Wr2y7jff+KPUmt/iyIx9KD7+reEOobMrNUfJpGYAwy+PYA1Jdocu3eXZPWiNi3k= =NWHG -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------enig2E9B429B27882FB3C9756BF2-- From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sat Apr 02 02:51:37 2011 Received: (at 8405) by debbugs.gnu.org; 2 Apr 2011 06:51:37 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1Q5ugL-0006ia-IA for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 02 Apr 2011 02:51:37 -0400 Received: from mx.meyering.net ([82.230.74.64]) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1Q5ugI-0006iN-Bz for 8405@debbugs.gnu.org; Sat, 02 Apr 2011 02:51:35 -0400 Received: by rho.meyering.net (Acme Bit-Twister, from userid 1000) id 41ABD60315; Sat, 2 Apr 2011 08:51:28 +0200 (CEST) From: Jim Meyering To: aakanksha gaur Subject: Re: bug#8405: Information needed for 'cp' In-Reply-To: <4D960B27.6030205@redhat.com> (Eric Blake's message of "Fri, 01 Apr 2011 11:28:07 -0600") References: <4D960B27.6030205@redhat.com> Date: Sat, 02 Apr 2011 08:51:28 +0200 Message-ID: <874o6hgn7z.fsf@rho.meyering.net> Lines: 47 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain X-Spam-Score: -5.9 (-----) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 8405 Cc: 8405@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.11 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -5.9 (-----) tags 8405 + moreinfo notabug thanks Eric Blake wrote: > On 04/01/2011 02:42 AM, aakanksha gaur wrote: >> Hi, >> >> I need to know what is the rationale behind this behavior ? >> >>> cp aa bb >> aa does not exist and neither does bb. Also, 'cp -v' makes cp more verbose about what it did and tried. By sending to bug-coreutils@gnu.org (rather than to coreutils@gnu.org) you have automatically created a bug report (http://debbugs.gnu.org/8405). Since this seems to be due to a misunderstanding and not a bug, I'm marking it as "notabug". Of course, if you provide details showing there is a legitimate bug, we'll adjust that.
