On Debian the gpsbabel M-x man gpsbabel page looks like

   Usage:
              gpsbabel [options] -i INTYPE -f INFILE [filter] -o OUTTYPE -F
              OUTFILE gpsbabel [options] -i INTYPE -o OUTTYPE INFILE [filter]
              OUTFILE

Same in an emacs shell buffer doing
$ man gpsbabel
which looks like
   Usage:
              gpsbabel [options] -i INTYPE -f INFILE [filter] -o OUTTYPE -F OUTFILE
              gpsbabel [options] -i INTYPE -o OUTTYPE INFILE [filter] OUTFILE
outside emacs. Much better.
I tested with user: nobody.

In GNU Emacs 24.0.50.1 (i486-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.20.1)
 of 2011-03-16 on cigue, modified by Debian
 (emacs-snapshot package, version 1:20110316-1)

I think that's probably because your shell outside Emacs has a different
width. The gpsbabel.1 man page is buggy -- it doesn't have a .br before
the second line, so that it looks nice in your shell is just a
coincidence.
