Message #5 received at submit <at> debbugs.gnu.org (full text, mbox):
Emacs 24.0.50 r103501
I am using gnus to read mail from Google Mail via imap.
When I pull up my INBOX folder with C-u Return gnus asks me how many
articles to download. The default value according to gnus is 8823. When
I press Return, it downloads 42 articles, as many as are actually in the
INBOX folder. Shouldn't it display the actual number of messages in the folder?
Other folders have the same problem and also display an incorrect
default number of messages.

Gnus only knows the min and max article numbers in each group -- it does
not know about possibly missing articles in that range.
This could, of course, be fixed for the backends that do have that
information readily available, like nnimap, but that hasn't been
implemented yet.

I see.

OK. Eventually, this would be nice.
Initially, I never dared to hit Enter on the group, because I didn't want
gnus to download 8162 messages. ;)

Yup; it'll happen at some point, but I'm closing this bug report, since
it doesn't make much sense to have it in the bug tracker until that
(major rework) is done.
