Periodically a leap second is needed to be inserted and when that happens the seconds really are 60. Here is a reference for leap seconds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_second Bob From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Mon Feb 28 21:52:52 2011 Received: (at 8142) by debbugs.gnu.org; 1 Mar 2011 02:52:52 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1PuFhj-0005LH-Li for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 28 Feb 2011 21:52:51 -0500 Received: from mx1.redhat.com ([209.132.183.28]) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1PuFhg-0005Kx-G4; Mon, 28 Feb 2011 21:52:50 -0500 Received: from int-mx01.intmail.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com (int-mx01.intmail.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com [10.5.11.11]) by mx1.redhat.com (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p212qgCg026091 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=OK); Mon, 28 Feb 2011 21:52:42 -0500 Received: from [10.3.113.122] (ovpn-113-122.phx2.redhat.com [10.3.113.122]) by int-mx01.intmail.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id p212qfep018962; Mon, 28 Feb 2011 21:52:41 -0500 Message-ID: <4D6C5F79.10000@redhat.com> Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2011 19:52:41 -0700 From: Eric Blake Organization: Red Hat User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101209 Fedora/3.1.7-0.35.b3pre.fc14 Lightning/1.0b3pre Mnenhy/0.8.3 Thunderbird/3.1.7 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: "Schaefer, Kevin L" Subject: date help text [was: bug#8142: Bug Submission] References: <4134F8268994D14AA6EDD1951C05E8B6258D678990@dx05.mckendree.edu> In-Reply-To: <4134F8268994D14AA6EDD1951C05E8B6258D678990@dx05.mckendree.edu> X-Enigmail-Version: 1.1.2 OpenPGP: url=http://people.redhat.com/eblake/eblake.gpg Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha256; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="------------enigEFA7A1376040D6FB6185650C" X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.67 on 10.5.11.11 X-Spam-Score: -10.3 (----------) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 8142 Cc: 8142@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.11 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -10.3 (----------) This is an OpenPGP/MIME signed message (RFC 2440 and 3156) --------------enigEFA7A1376040D6FB6185650C Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable retitle 8142 date help text tag 8142 + notabug close 8142 thanks On 02/28/2011 06:23 PM, Schaefer, Kevin L wrote: >=20 > Hello, > I located a bug in the help page for the date command, which can be acc= essed by typing "date --help". It says that the range for second is (00..= 60), when it should probably be (00..59). Thanks for the report. However, the man page is correct. Some systems support accurate calculation of leap seconds, and according to https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Leap_second, there have been 24 such times in the last 40 years where the correct time ended in :60 seconds; most recently on Dec 31 2008.
