Hmm... not in my test:

       (let ((address "(sadffds \\( adf)") pos)
         (while (setq pos (string-match
                          ;; This doesn't hack rfc822 nested comments
                          ;;  `(xyzzy (foo) whinge)' properly.  Big deal.
                          "[ \t]*(\\([^()\\]\\|\\\\.\\|\\\\\n\\)*)"
                          address))

returns "".
