    Indeed it fails if one sets dired-use-ls-dired to nil.

    That variable is initialized in a funny way, via

    (string-match "gnu" system-configuration)

    I guess (?) many Mac users do indeed have access to GNU ls, despite
    not having "gnu" in their `system-configuration'.
