This was a little bit confusing at the start. Actually, it _should_ be 3 dots, because our convention is that 3 dots imply that you can repeat one of the earlier items more than once. That = is: chmod go-rw file or even the (redundant) version: chmod ggoo-rrww file are both perfectly acceptable (multiple instances from the set [ugoa], then [-], then multiple instances from the set of [PERMS]). >=20 > GNU manuals are full of this weird kinda logic, or I am not > understanding something. Hmm; I just noticed that 'info coreutils "File permissions"' gives a much better overview of chmod arguments. I stand corrected on my earlier claim; the manual already states this under 'info coreutils chmod= ': If used, MODE specifies the new file mode bits. For details, see the section on *note File permissions::. I suggest you read that chapter. > I've gotta give it to Microsoft, they get their manuals right. The man pages assume you already know Unix-like operations. The info pages, on the other hand, should cater to new users; if you have suggestions on how we can improve that, we are all ears. --=20 Eric Blake eblake@redhat.com +1-801-349-2682 Libvirt virtualization library http://libvirt.org --------------enig898673F32A0EE308D6268605 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Public key at http://people.redhat.com/eblake/eblake.gpg Comment: Using GnuPG with Fedora - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQEcBAEBCAAGBQJM9nwaAAoJEKeha0olJ0NqBysH/3uEQh/jXwEZ+0UIpsdBdX0I 6XQQtah2LTazn+1Vq2DK3WsxF/CWkoEU+l5ZcGONmVIa6dxHmCmtrBPNXmqejXMy XUH24jLbVCcTMjBGuc448eCCtNkMhB2E38gYKtZsFXiX8VZfeaKFuKos9qmBXl8p 1M5sikp4DUn8qFaCs7z2IVMC7QbubkBmM7hbijOcpanLqN1Kpu4SITf6KoIqe5PD y98Zx2KwJrx7JhqMcDl0iIVU6UBNS06sfzulmVsroj3UQaoxVbnqV7VQkpT8C3dI ZbcayKBNGuNffxvSoYNwbZG8gaAni0hucPOz9ArC2ybz8C3lhkc3sY7M4xXpSrY= =feUr -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------enig898673F32A0EE308D6268605-- From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Wed Dec 01 14:29:17 2010 Received: (at 7523) by debbugs.gnu.org; 1 Dec 2010 19:29:17 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1PNsMf-0003Ez-1d for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 01 Dec 2010 14:29:17 -0500 Received: from smtp.cs.ucla.edu ([131.179.128.62]) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1PNsMM-0003EH-7m for 7523@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 01 Dec 2010 14:29:16 -0500 Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by smtp.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id E97D839E80E0; Wed, 1 Dec 2010 11:34:36 -0800 (PST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at smtp.cs.ucla.edu Received: from smtp.cs.ucla.edu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (smtp.cs.ucla.edu [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id nkQXxCCBTkf8; Wed, 1 Dec 2010 11:34:36 -0800 (PST) Received: from [131.179.64.200] (Penguin.CS.UCLA.EDU [131.179.64.200]) by smtp.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 1E5F839E80B1; Wed, 1 Dec 2010 11:34:36 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <4CF6A34B.8010309@cs.ucla.edu> Date: Wed, 01 Dec 2010 11:34:35 -0800 From: Paul Eggert Organization: UCLA Computer Science Department User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.15) Gecko/20101027 Thunderbird/3.0.10 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Eric Blake Subject: Re: bug#7523: chmod example in docs References: <4CF665C8.3060507@redhat.com> <8CD5F8B5C23BE2E-2260-112A3@web-mmc-m04.sysops.aol.com> <4CF67C1A.6040009@redhat.com> In-Reply-To: <4CF67C1A.6040009@redhat.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Spam-Score: -3.3 (---) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 7523 Cc: 7523@debbugs.gnu.org, nikkae@email.com X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.11 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -3.3 (---) >> > I've gotta give it to Microsoft, they get their manuals right. Sorry, but I had to laugh at that one. Here's a quote from a Microsoft manual on this very topic: chmod A UNIX command meaning "change module." which is bogus, of course: even someone with only passing acquaintance with chmod should know that the "mod" doesn't stand for module. (Even Wikipedia's page on chmod is better that Microsoft's on this point.) A note at the start of that Microsoft page says: "No warranty is made as to technical accuracy." which is a remark that you can take the bank, when reading Microsoft manuals. I'm not saying GNU manuals are perfect. Far from it! But we should not aim for being merely as good as Microsoft manuals, as that would be far too low a target. In many cases they're not much better than Wikipedia, and all too often they're worse.
