I've already looked through google and some valuable results pointed out some discussions on stackoverflow ... where this was somewhat discussed ... but (IMHO) no really valid explanation was outlined. Some claim that this is due to 'set -o pipefail' beeing used in the script... but this does not really explain why it only _sometimes_ happens. (what makes me think that this might be some kind of weird issue which needs to be adressed somehow... maybe) Long story - made short... I've linked a simple and short bash script (created and tested and reproducible at least here) with all the required information inside) - that can reproduce the issue: https://download.undermydesk.org/bash-grep-q-special-issue.sh (all explanations inside) thankyou all! cheers, FR -- 43rd Law of Computing: Anything that can go wr fortune: Segmentation violation -- Core dumped From unknown Sat Aug 09 09:38:01 2025 X-Loop: help-debbugs@gnu.org Subject: bug#74699: need valid explanation / weird 'grep -q' behaviour Resent-From: Paul Eggert Original-Sender: "Debbugs-submit" Resent-CC: bug-grep@gnu.org Resent-Date: Thu, 05 Dec 2024 20:00:02 +0000 Resent-Message-ID: Resent-Sender: help-debbugs@gnu.org X-GNU-PR-Message: followup 74699 X-GNU-PR-Package: grep X-GNU-PR-Keywords: To: Frank Reppin Cc: 74699@debbugs.gnu.org Received: via spool by 74699-submit@debbugs.gnu.org id=B74699.173342876932554 (code B ref 74699); Thu, 05 Dec 2024 20:00:02 +0000 Received: (at 74699) by debbugs.gnu.org; 5 Dec 2024 19:59:29 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:41063 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1tJI0X-0008T0-4b for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Thu, 05 Dec 2024 14:59:29 -0500 Received: from mail.cs.ucla.edu ([131.179.128.66]:42316) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1tJI0V-0008Si-83 for 74699@debbugs.gnu.org; Thu, 05 Dec 2024 14:59:28 -0500 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id E13923C03E9F1; Thu, 5 Dec 2024 11:59:20 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail.cs.ucla.edu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (mail.cs.ucla.edu [127.0.0.1]) (amavis, port 10032) with ESMTP id TIgeU8vuclif; Thu, 5 Dec 2024 11:59:20 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id A30CF3C082EA8; Thu, 5 Dec 2024 11:59:20 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Filter: OpenDKIM Filter v2.10.3 mail.cs.ucla.edu A30CF3C082EA8 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=cs.ucla.edu; s=9D0B346E-2AEB-11ED-9476-E14B719DCE6C; t=1733428760; bh=vqiAisXq0s+qhK1hp08G+FpOQh1tEf8gj+adKeZ4EXc=; h=Message-ID:Date:MIME-Version:To:From; b=NfRHcyQVA42GlmhheN6HUzEQQcGV5DdLUIlWzLfMXgm0iqW8z1pz46ttbuwVx53LF ZUeOwRFm1U7lUT7SJ9PMVDg6nhSw91qGGrW7xr7Q3kdbQoKTDl9okiV0hBRETOyomW KpyF6VOVY+a5YFhOAsL7VUMCbhBQPoMPwq62E9UCBpvr7jCprKXblzmRRa3AkHrcHj JUvqJyl7uSFZ3iwiRyxZc0F2hkW2nRddI9DrlE00WeBGzT8TH4D3xonZNkK4zp+8L4 zFdqiNlUUS0pII+wcrgsZ2/+VmenD4ONJW5PxxLxqULhQGqTb4A1haRSMJpH1D2o2R aN7H9pVgtViHA== X-Virus-Scanned: amavis at mail.cs.ucla.edu Received: from mail.cs.ucla.edu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (mail.cs.ucla.edu [127.0.0.1]) (amavis, port 10026) with ESMTP id gybcCqreZFI8; Thu, 5 Dec 2024 11:59:20 -0800 (PST) Received: from [192.168.254.12] (unknown [47.154.27.134]) by mail.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 864B03C03E9F1; Thu, 5 Dec 2024 11:59:20 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: Date: Thu, 5 Dec 2024 11:59:20 -0800 MIME-Version: 1.0 User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird References: <6961e92b-111e-4a58-8a60-38e8c2a3a5d5@undermydesk.org> Content-Language: en-US From: Paul Eggert Organization: UCLA Computer Science Department In-Reply-To: <6961e92b-111e-4a58-8a60-38e8c2a3a5d5@undermydesk.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Spam-Score: 0.0 (/) X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.0 (-) On 2024-12-04 15:43, Frank Reppin wrote: > Some claim that this is due to 'set -o pipefail' beeing used in the > script... but this does not really explain why it only _sometimes_ happens. I don't see why not. Pipe buffering is an "it all depends" situation. Anyway, I tried your script on bleeding-edge grep on Fedora 40 and it worked fine for me. You didn't mention your grep version; behavior in this area changed in 2016, though I doubt your version is that old. One workaround is to use "set -o pipefail" only for pipelines where you want the entire pipeline to fail merely because one component failed. In the meanwhile - it is more clear to me... ... especially after re-reading what others suspected on stackoverflow. The real reason seems to be (... is), that a proper match seems to kill the pipe early with exitcode 141 - and thus making the pipe as a whole fail - as one would expect when using 'pipefail'. (although - to be honest - I didn't thought of exactly such a fail when it comes to use grep with '-q' in such cases). However - it thus turns out to be OK. One just has to be cautious when using it in this way... ... not sure if it's maybe worth mentioning in the manpage?! (that pipefail or other returncode checking mechanisms should be aware of this fact - for the unaware). cheers, FR On 05.12.2024 20:59, Paul Eggert wrote: > On 2024-12-04 15:43, Frank Reppin wrote: >> Some claim that this is due to 'set -o pipefail' beeing used in the >> script... but this does not really explain why it only _sometimes_ >> happens. > > I don't see why not. then Looking at the grep(1) man page entry for its "-q" option, we see it says: -q, --quiet, --silent Quiet; do not write anything to standard output. Exit immediately with zero status if any if any match is found, even if an error was detected. Also see the -s or --no-messages option. So we have an "if" statement testing the exit value of a pipe of 'echo' to 'grep' where the 'grep' will exit early, if it finds a match early. As a secondary matter of efficiency, we also have the contents of TMPOUT filling the value of shell's formulation of the argument to be passed to echo'd into a pipe, instead of directly grep'ing in TMPOUT. If for some reason I don't see off hand, you prefer to remain with this inefficient "echo contents_of_TMPOUT | grep ..." construct, I'd suggest using "grep -c" instead of "grep -q", then checking for a positive count, thus forcing the entire contents of TMPOUT to be read and echo'd, before the grep decides it can exit early and break the pipe: if [[ $(echo "$( cat "${TMPOUT}" 2>/dev/null ) | grep -c "^${V}$") -gt 0 ]]; then Or, more efficiently, just "grep -q" directly in TMPOUT and skip the echo and pipe entirely: if grep -q "^${V}$" "${TMPOUT}"; then -- Paul Jackson jackson@fastmail.fm From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Fri Dec 06 22:59:46 2024 Received: (at control) by debbugs.gnu.org; 7 Dec 2024 03:59:46 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:44973 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1tJlyr-0001nB-VF for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 06 Dec 2024 22:59:46 -0500 Received: from mail.cs.ucla.edu ([131.179.128.66]:37750) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1tJlyn-0001mr-H2 for control@debbugs.gnu.org; Fri, 06 Dec 2024 22:59:44 -0500 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9997F3C00FA91 for ; Fri, 6 Dec 2024 19:59:35 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail.cs.ucla.edu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (mail.cs.ucla.edu [127.0.0.1]) (amavis, port 10032) with ESMTP id QWZwhhwiSJhw for ; Fri, 6 Dec 2024 19:59:35 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 41ED43C082C95 for ; Fri, 6 Dec 2024 19:59:35 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Filter: OpenDKIM Filter v2.10.3 mail.cs.ucla.edu 41ED43C082C95 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=cs.ucla.edu; s=9D0B346E-2AEB-11ED-9476-E14B719DCE6C; t=1733543975; bh=XzCVHS11B68E9xrgh+SuCfG0uDORl1WiOYsYd07bLgo=; h=Message-ID:Date:MIME-Version:To:From; b=KAJA27TxwY30Qarz+Q3kYFhz+NTr5/gAk0XK/jeGT/yNlHwhitbUISdcgMa874f90 tk80VG9coPWiXjwsCWocpnFiy8zfHTdLpAvadYNDiadJ3QAsuxglN9ZHQ+P+PMlOKU YSH5Hhk3SqhmgY7UNHS9dBMURw/jjA3qt5Xnt+2y66pieA/gPuqgycR/csEhxQLehb jz1DPBbKhiQMwiC9VCdPTFxkqob9saQ7FPgo3jYo9oExXd49cqwWKBbs4r1EC2dfRr v00dxPHQymXkC4mIwNEfHuFDZ+2FGELYFBlpmeAfU4biuut2OFiVUTtnl+ozNtS4aU VXUWlL3t9R8fw== X-Virus-Scanned: amavis at mail.cs.ucla.edu Received: from mail.cs.ucla.edu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (mail.cs.ucla.edu [127.0.0.1]) (amavis, port 10026) with ESMTP id NGxB59koI4Ul for ; Fri, 6 Dec 2024 19:59:35 -0800 (PST) Received: from [192.168.254.12] (unknown [47.154.27.134]) by mail.cs.ucla.edu (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 2A6CC3C00FA91 for ; Fri, 6 Dec 2024 19:59:35 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: Date: Fri, 6 Dec 2024 19:59:35 -0800 MIME-Version: 1.0 User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird Content-Language: en-US To: control@debbugs.gnu.org From: Paul Eggert Subject: 74699 is not a bug Organization: UCLA Computer Science Department Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Spam-Score: 0.0 (/) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: control X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sender: "Debbugs-submit" X-Spam-Score: -1.0 (-) tags 74699 notabug close 74699
