However, this is not a bug, but how the shell works. By default, if a shell glob has no matches (in your case, there are no files ending in .log in the current directory), then the glob is passed as-is to the child process. And truncate assumes that when given a file name that it should create that file. >=20 > I would expect "truncate --size 0 *.log" to truncate any files ending > with ".log"; instead I get a new file called "*.log" Then your expectations need to be refined in light of standardized shell globbing behavior. Also, since you mentioned you use bash, you can change your shell defaults. For example, 'shopt -s failglob' would make your above command abort because no .log files were present, rather than passing the unexpanded glob on as a filename. Likewise, 'shopt -s nullglob' would make a non-matching glob silently result in no output (use with caution; things like 'cat *.log' become a much different beast when nullglob is enabled). --=20 Eric Blake eblake@redhat.com +1-801-349-2682 Libvirt virtualization library http://libvirt.org --------------enigCB20410A60EB026FE42B358F Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Public key at http://people.redhat.com/eblake/eblake.gpg Comment: Using GnuPG with Fedora - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQEcBAEBCAAGBQJM6pDNAAoJEKeha0olJ0NqgsIIAKkQRp6xAccx+35eXiTe7TyT RvRi0Dgr9iE5Ie7GMAGF4eWUVyakVFVP4+kaGYnA/w+W5I8JTSYe+i0SfSqTA7dV S/XxIw1E4Jvzp1K1mvbgRvUDaIlc/ZxCtiZavhM9YrZEQ+82bQQ6KJlotoMqdxsK Ojt8yl4TPY/sxEoKsnwdprgqcNGTlYKe7rmpBkBl3mGz/qSp79uVocFN+HXWIKha V4kCsxIFbRFoFnNGLpTBTkESr4tNHYXER2S61KTSC+/0lmyycVj2vp8m0SVlQouT QpoXgtNUewNXqox5z14YnX2sOVDX3lyL6H99CvYDXtZHxkc8XfKw0CoRvIfT3ME= =XYRY -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------enigCB20410A60EB026FE42B358F-- From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Mon Nov 22 10:52:48 2010 Received: (at 7463) by debbugs.gnu.org; 22 Nov 2010 15:52:48 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1PKYhD-0006xH-Ti for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 22 Nov 2010 10:52:48 -0500 Received: from mail-yx0-f172.google.com ([209.85.213.172]) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1PKYIt-0006lG-IG for 7463@debbugs.gnu.org; Mon, 22 Nov 2010 10:27:39 -0500 Received: by yxk30 with SMTP id 30so1315501yxk.3 for <7463@debbugs.gnu.org>; Mon, 22 Nov 2010 07:32:54 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:received:mime-version:received:in-reply-to :references:from:date:message-id:subject:to:cc:content-type; bh=/A9KKnFUX5haALXnkaMBl1qthhGp6TpkM7VIbsM6Cj0=; b=O4Qi/5dSH4zVPPEFs2M9nbFpuZVhsgA5aDIaMcR2oyk/rgjgpP+MuI9URCRTOE1Okz PnbXTm/+Vsh7nvsQ79qBDd9ys9LCDmdWI1BzMNJivkE9haUBTaI4P8mAffkENDBQWtcP uznBGbGK5hLxLiq0WPUGI/34a8/YQOlAd/45g= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc:content-type; b=D+ViyMlfCAdWUBuT9frnwK0U05teqHHc7FnT2Lad4YrTefioc+znNB51J7SxxA3H0z 9caRTSkXHs+jUJvA+AcctR0NT+knpWTh2/6+lEZK5WWnWvXtmk0qEBMpgf+YDY7DVGy3 Sf7HFrSreGH8k0gmEjXR0lnUB6cTbSL8wP/zg= Received: by 10.216.23.137 with SMTP id v9mr7689918wev.49.1290439967398; Mon, 22 Nov 2010 07:32:47 -0800 (PST) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.216.230.15 with HTTP; Mon, 22 Nov 2010 07:32:25 -0800 (PST) In-Reply-To: <4CEA811D.4000700@nearshore.biz> References: <4CEA811D.4000700@nearshore.biz> From: Steve Ward Date: Mon, 22 Nov 2010 10:32:25 -0500 Message-ID: Subject: Re: bug#7463: truncate To: Rupert Bruce Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary=0016364c7ad5dc82190495a5f7aa X-Spam-Score: -2.6 (--) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 7463 X-Mailman-Approved-At: Mon, 22 Nov 2010 10:52:46 -0500 Cc: 7463@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.11 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -2.6 (--) --0016364c7ad5dc82190495a5f7aa Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 On Mon, Nov 22, 2010 at 09:41, Rupert Bruce wrote: > truncate (GNU coreutils) 7.4 > > Unexpected behavior: > > $ ls -l > total 0 > $ truncate --size 0 *.log > $ ls > *.log > > I would expect "truncate --size 0 *.log" to truncate any files ending with > ".log"; instead I get a new file called "*.log" > > FYI, one of the first changes I make on a new installation is to alias > truncate in .bashrc: > alias ll='ls -l' > alias la='ls -A' > alias truncate='truncate --size 0' > > > > > In newer versions of truncate there is a "--no-create" option. truncate (GNU coreutils) 7.4

Unexpected behavior:

$ ls -l
total 0
$ truncate --size 0 *.log
$ ls
*.log

I would expect "truncate --size 0 *.log" to truncate any files en= ding with ".log"; instead I get a new file called "*.log&quo= t;

FYI, one of the first changes I make on a new installation is to alias trun= cate in .bashrc:
alias ll=3D'ls -l'
alias la=3D'ls -A'
alias truncate=3D'truncate --size 0'

In newer versions of truncate there is a "-= -no-create" option.
