Subject: 29.3; Wayland, daemon: window wont resize
Date: Sat, 17 Aug 2024 14:45:46 +0530
The emacs windows doesnt resize.
If I logout and relogin with Xorg (Wayland is the default in Ubuntu)
then it works as normal.
This is transient and happens at times not at others.
Also seems to happen more with daemon emacs

It appears you report this bug is hard to reproduce.

Have you observed any other conditions where this bug is manifested?

(Ideally a recipe starting from emacs -Q would help.)

Window system-emacs interaction misbehavior has been troubling me for
a few weeks now.
This bug is about the most reproducable I could formulate:
emacs -Q didnt have the problem; after that the normal emacs didnt
have the problem!!
Again it will surface at some point in unknown circumstances!!

Also I see it in my normal emacs usage ie. with fg-daemon more than if
I start emacs standalone.
But again even this is not properly reproducable

A worse one but even less reproducable was this:
I change to the emacs window with MOUSE.
But as soon as I TYPE, the characters go to some other window!!

This was so random I could give nothing else but a description so
didnt make a bug report. But I suspect its the same
window-system-emacs interaction problem.

If I get anyhing more reproducable I will submit but for now I dont have

Ok I now got it with emacs -Q

I am adding the report-emacs-bug buffer from there

Two additions — one clarification and one additional (I think) related bug

1. When I say "The emacs window does not resize" I mean does not
resize by mouse. Alt-F8 works.
2. Another bug that I think is related: By default I start an emacs
daemon in the startup applications and connect with emacs client.
When I do this the window is tiny sized (and does not resize). ie some
5 lines by 16 characters
Closing the daemon and starting the daemon afresh makes the problem
disappear, so not sure where I can give a "- Q" recipe

Thanks, but what did you get and how?

Can you show a complete recipe starting from "emacs -Q"?

1. The emacs window(s) dont resize (on mouse drag). They resize
alright on Alt-F8
2. Also sometimes the emacs window is absurdly small sized (like a
matchbox) something like 5 lines by 15 chars

Seems to happen more with emacs-daemon-client which is my normal usage pattern

So you just type "emacs -Q", and get a window that is sometimes very
small, and you cannot resize it? Or do you need to do something else?

> Seems to happen more with emacs-daemon-client which is my normal usage pattern

This seems to imply that you start Emacs like this:

 $ emacs -Q --daemon

and then connect to it using emacsclient and get a window that cannot
be resized by mouse or is very small, is that true?

When I said "I got it" it was because I got it from the above
But it's transient (so its not happening now)

By default I have in my startup applications:

emacs -r -fg-daemon

M shortform to start emacs is my own .desktop file in .local whose exec line is

Exec=/usr/bin/emacsclient -c %F

emacs (client) has stopped starting now!!

In more detail
emacsclient -n -c
Nothing happens

emacsclient -c
starts a text emacs within the shell

Plain emacs starts

[Will be without my machine for a few days; in case anyone wants to
test out things]
