thanks for the report. See also my message[1] and Keita's answer[2].
Can you please do me a favor and restart your emacs and update AUCTeX
right away, i.e., without opening a .tex file before updating? Maybe
that cures the issue. TIA.
Best, Arash

Thanks for the report. Currently it is known that updating of ELPA
AUCTeX doesn't work. Until a fixed version is released, please stay with
the former version of AUCTeX.
Sorry for inconvenience.

That indeed gets rid of the error when installing. I still get
fundamental-mode for .tex files nonetheless.

For me laoding "tex-site" overwrites the autoload definition of
`LaTeX-mode' with a `nil' function cell.

Thanks for testing; so this part is done.

This should be also fixed now; watch for AUCTeX 14.0.2. which should be
available very soon.

As expected it's fixed for me as well. Thanks to everyone.
Side note: Please do not generally assume that every user upgrades from
a fresh session. This might be ideal for the developer but is not what
people (should need to) do.
If an upgrade fails I try to uninstall and reinstall, it's ok for me
when this happens from time to time, but it should not be the rule that
this happens every time.
In theory it should be possible to avoid such problems with feature
unloading, but it's probably not worth the trouble to try to tune this
stuff.
Note 2: I did not find information about how to report bugs in the
AucTex manual. Either I missed it or it should maybe be added.
Thx so far,
Michael.

Thanks for confirming it, I'm closing the ticket.

I think it's the former case, the instructions about how to report
bugs are at the very beginning of the AUCTeX manual:
https://www.gnu.org/software/auctex/manual/auctex/index.html
> Bug reports should go to bug-auctex <at> gnu.org, suggestions for new features, and pleas for help should go to either auctex-devel <at> gnu.org (the AUCTeX developers), or to auctex <at> gnu.org if they might have general interest. Please use the command M-x TeX-submit-bug-report <RET> to report bugs if possible. You can subscribe to a low-volume announcement list by sending “subscribe” in the subject of a mail to info-auctex-request <at> gnu.org.

Mosè

Oh - it's on the front page. That's why I was not able to find it in
the index nor node names.
Michael.

Thanks for reporting back. I'm closing this report since the initial
issues seem to be resolved.

Thanks for the side note. OTOH, I'd like say that AUCTeX was stable for
many years and for this release, some internals were changed and we
discussed possible breakage upfront. The change was inevitable so it is
up to us to guide users through the update process now.
At any rate, I hope that users bear with us and enjoy the advantages of
the change. I think it is worth it and we should be grateful to Keita
would did the actual coding.
Best, Arash

All good, it's acceptable in such a situation. There have been much
worse kinds of breakage in other packages quite often.
Thanks again,
Michael.
