After a bit of testing, it appears that it uses the same naive kind of
calculation that I tried to use for the advice in the beginning, but it
doesn't play nicely with scaled fonts and the
`display-line-numbers-mode'.  The scrollbar doesn't scroll all the way
in this configuration.  Comments in the `truncated-lines-p' function
that I sent describe the reasons why simple calculation like that did
not work.
