FWIW, I've had the below snippet in my .emacs for the last two years,
and haven't noticed any adverse effects.  I never bothered making any
actual benchmarks though:

    ;; Maybe faster:
    (setq read-process-output-max
          (max read-process-output-max (* 64 1024)))
