Subject: 29.1; Key input M-w gets mapped to H-M-w and similar mappings
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2023 12:16:19 +0200
After switching from emacs-28 to emacs-29 (compiled, installed and
started new emacs without any further changes, restarts or other changes
to the system) and starting the new emacs-29 build I directly observerd that
pressing "M-w" yielded a "H-M-w" (which is bound to any function). This
applies to all other input with modifier Meta I tried via
describe-key-briefly.

Output of my xmodmap -pm is
shift       Shift_L (0x32),  Shift_R (0x3e)
lock
control     Control_L (0x25),  Control_R (0x69)
mod1        Alt_L (0x40),  Alt_R (0x6c)
mod2        Super_L (0x42),  Super_L (0xce)
mod3
mod4        Meta_L (0x85),  Meta_R (0x86)
mod5        Mode_switch (0x87)

There is no Hyper key defined in my local Xmodmap (no keycode). After adding a
keycode for Hyper_L (bound to some unused key, as my keyboard has no
Hyper keys) and adding it to mod3, I got the expected behaviour in
emacs, i.e. "M-w" remained "M-w" with the usual binding to
kill-ring-save. So I have a work-around.

Out of curiousity I also removed Alt_L and Alt_R bindings for mod1 in
Xmodmap but left the keycode definitions for those two kesy. I got a
similarly wrong behaviour. For example "A-y" got translated to "A-s-y".
