Do
$ emacs -Q -f shell
$ echo -n Password:; read
Password: ...
C-h l
upon which we see the view-lossage record is truncated.
Why can't you just put a "[PASSWORD]" marker in there? Why do you have to wipe everything out?
Also the view-lossage docstring doesn't say what is going on.

Putting something the user didn't write in view-lossage is an even
bigger bug than censoring some of what she wrote.

So I don't think this is a bug.
