I can try to boil it down to some simpler sequence. The crash occurs with some larger package I've been working with where reverting buffers did not quite work the way it is supposed to. At some point I ended up with the situation that reverting a buffer reproducibly crashes emacs. Yet it could well be the case that the real cause is only loosely related to reverting. If I don't succeed with pinning this down, I'll post the whole code so that someone more knowledgeable can look into this. Any hints on what these crashes are possibly be related with according to the backtrace are greatly appreciated. Let me try to give you some insights, by walking the call-stack frames, telling what I see, and asking questions. #1 0x081deb85 in temp_set_point_both (buffer=0x98411c8, charpos=92, bytepos=92) at intervals.c:1950 This frame causes the crash here: if (charpos > BUF_ZV (buffer) || charpos < BUF_BEGV (buffer)) abort (); BUF_ZV and BUF_BEGV are, respectively (point-max) and (point-min) of the buffer. Since we see that charpos is 92, I'm guessing that the first comparison is the culprit, i.e. (point-max) is less than or equal to 92. What do the following GDB commands display in frame #1? (gdb) print buffer->zv (gdb) print *buffer->text->beg@N Here N is the value of buffer->zv displayed by the first command. #2 0x08091754 in redisplay_window (window=159032549, just_this_one_p=0) at xdisp.c:13940 This frame calls temp_set_point_both here: /* Restore current_buffer and value of point in it. */ TEMP_SET_PT_BOTH (CHARPOS (opoint), BYTEPOS (opoint)); opoint is initialized at the beginning of the function to the value of point: SET_TEXT_POS (lpoint, PT, PT_BYTE); opoint = lpoint; So it looks like the value of point that was valid before redisplaying the window somehow became invalid during redisplaying it. Hmm... What kind of buffer is this? Type these commands to find out: (gdb) print buffer->name (gdb) xstring Also, what window are we redisplaying? Type these commands: (gdb) print w->mini_p (gdb) xsymbol TIA From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Wed May 12 18:14:32 2010 Received: (at 6177) by debbugs.gnu.org; 12 May 2010 22:14:32 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1OCKCF-0000Q1-No for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 12 May 2010 18:14:32 -0400 Received: from tfkpsv.physik.uni-erlangen.de ([131.188.164.197]) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1OCKCC-0000Pv-M5 for 6177@debbugs.gnu.org; Wed, 12 May 2010 18:14:29 -0400 Received: from regnitz.physics.niu.edu (74.223.218.194.nw.nuvox.net [74.223.218.194]) by tfkpsv.physik.uni-erlangen.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2590F239CC; Wed, 12 May 2010 23:13:16 +0200 (CEST) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <19435.6630.705828.513141@regnitz.physics.niu.edu> Date: Wed, 12 May 2010 16:13:10 -0500 From: Roland Winkler To: Eli Zaretskii Subject: Re: bug#6177: 23.2; emacs crashes when reverting a file In-Reply-To: <83ljbpq0pi.fsf@gnu.org> References: <87632uvx11.fsf@regnitz.physics.niu.edu> <83ljbpq0pi.fsf@gnu.org> X-Mailer: VM 8.2 trial under 23.2.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) X-Spam-Score: -2.6 (--) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: 6177 Cc: 6177@debbugs.gnu.org X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.11 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -2.5 (--) On Wed May 12 2010 Eli Zaretskii wrote: > > I've encountered a situation, where reverting a file reproducibly > > crashes emacs. I got a simpler test case that works with emacs -Q. The point about the code below is that buffer *bar* depends on what happens to file foo.txt visited in its own buffer: reverting buffer *bar* really operates on the buffer visiting foo.txt. I used to recommend lightweight checkouts for this kind of problem: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2010-02/msg00058.html But I've since found out there is a bug that makes them fairly useless, IMO: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bzr/+bug/319374 Anyway, it might work for you; or perhaps you could use one of the unoffical mirrors that offer the repository in alternative formats. > And "Browse source" is disabled on Savannah ("loggerhead disabled > due to unstability")... Yes, it seems Savannah is not capable of providing this service. I can only refer you to an unofficial mirror: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~vcs-imports/emacs/trunk/revision/100461 From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Tue Jun 15 08:44:57 2010 Received: (at submit) by debbugs.gnu.org; 15 Jun 2010 12:44:57 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1OOVVg-0001o3-Pb for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 08:44:57 -0400 Received: from mail.gnu.org ([199.232.76.166] helo=mx10.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1OOVVd-0001nw-Ro for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 08:44:54 -0400 Received: from lists.gnu.org ([199.232.76.165]:49793) by monty-python.gnu.org with esmtps (TLS-1.0:DHE_RSA_AES_256_CBC_SHA1:32) (Exim 4.60) (envelope-from ) id 1OOVVY-0004Wg-Mb for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 08:44:48 -0400 Received: from [140.186.70.92] (port=55017 helo=eggs.gnu.org) by lists.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1OOVVS-0005l7-KB for bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 08:44:47 -0400 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.3.1 (2010-03-16) on eggs.gnu.org X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-1.9 required=5.0 tests=BAYES_00,T_RP_MATCHES_RCVD autolearn=unavailable version=3.3.1 Received: from Debian-exim by eggs.gnu.org with spam-scanned (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1OOVVR-000778-8Y for bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 08:44:42 -0400 Received: from lo.gmane.org ([80.91.229.12]:36680) by eggs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1OOVVR-00076i-3B for bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 08:44:41 -0400 Received: from list by lo.gmane.org with local (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1OOVVL-0008HG-1Q for bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 14:44:35 +0200 Received: from bombardier2.lfdj.com ([81.80.56.131]) by main.gmane.org with esmtp (Gmexim 0.1 (Debian)) id 1AlnuQ-0007hv-00 for ; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 14:44:35 +0200 Received: from gpion by bombardier2.lfdj.com with local (Gmexim 0.1 (Debian)) id 1AlnuQ-0007hv-00 for ; Tue, 15 Jun 2010 14:44:35 +0200 X-Injected-Via-Gmane: http://gmane.org/ To: bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org connect(): No such file or directory From: Gilles Pion Subject: Re: bug#6177: 23.2; emacs crashes when reverting a file Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2010 12:44:27 +0000 (UTC) Lines: 36 Message-ID: References: <19453.14304.113023.689840@gargle.gargle.HOWL> <878w75bb4d.fsf@stupidchicken.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Complaints-To: usenet@dough.gmane.org X-Gmane-NNTP-Posting-Host: sea.gmane.org User-Agent: Loom/3.14 (http://gmane.org/) X-Loom-IP: 81.80.56.131 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; fr-FR; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3) X-detected-operating-system: by eggs.gnu.org: GNU/Linux 2.6 (newer, 3) X-detected-operating-system: by monty-python.gnu.org: GNU/Linux 2.6, seldom 2.4 (older, 4) X-Spam-Score: -4.6 (----) X-Debbugs-Envelope-To: submit X-BeenThere: debbugs-submit@debbugs.gnu.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.11 Precedence: list List-Id: List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Errors-To: debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org X-Spam-Score: -5.6 (-----) Glenn Morris gnu.org> writes: > > Yes, it seems Savannah is not capable of providing this service. > I can only refer you to an unofficial mirror: > > http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~vcs-imports/emacs/trunk/revision/100461 > unsuccessful: > Sorry, there was a problem connecting to the Launchpad server. >Try reloading this page in a minute or two. IIUC launchpad works, but if the Bzr it uses internally takes too long it returns the above page. The good thing is that the caches mean that the subsequent accesses are faster, so in my experience the first access fails but if I try it again, then it works. If you report it as suggested, you are likely to get more expert help, and you will be helping to improve GNU Bazaar. > Still searching for a way to download *easily* the latest emacs dev source > snapshot bzr branch --stacked http://bzr.savannah.gnu.org/r/emacs/trunk is not ideal, but takes < 5 minutes for me (on a machine with a good network connection), and never uses more than 240MB resident memory. (bzr revert works on the result too.) The Bazaar mailing list seems to be a helpful one.
