I had completely forgotten about your patch!  Sorry!  Well, re-reading
it, it doesn't seem as complex as Augusto's.  Is it also as functional?
Do you want to abandon it in favor of Augusto's?

And can we get a simple performance measurement before&after, maybe
for both patches?
