Please provide a precise step-by-step recipe for this bug, starting with
`emacs -Q'.  I haven't been able to reproduce this:

1. emacs -Q foo.tex
2. $2^3$

No crash observed.

GNU Emacs 23.1.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.16.1)
