Really? I looked again at the docstrings of version-to-list and
version-regexp-alist, and it seems pretty clear to me. Even if an Emacs
Lisp programmer is ignorant of what an EBNF is, it's pretty obvious from
the context what the docstring is talking about.
You have to be more specific about what's confusing you.
