FWIW, I'm not sure either.
I suspect the only generally-valid answer is to find a way to provide
more control (e.g. add a face attribute that specifies some kind of
precedence, or tweaks the weights given to various attributes).

I'm not sure we need to go there, tho.
I think Gregory's patch is "good enough for now".
