nnir -> gnus-search was quite a major change, and it would have been
impractical to maintain perfect backward compatibility (not to mention
that would prevent you from using some of gnus-search's new features).
You should have been seeing an obsolete variable warning about this on
every Emacs start -- that's supposed to be your clue.
