Actually my setup is rather vanilla: desktop mouse with a 'clicky' 
scroll wheel -- as opposed to a smooth-scrolling one -- running Ubuntu 
in a VM. So the mouse hardware is definitely an emulated one as far as 
X/Linux is concerned.
