Is there anything special about buffers where you see these slowdowns?
For instance, a large number of text properties or overlays?

(length (object-intervals (current-buffer)))

will tell you how many text properties there are (sort of), and

(length (overlays-in (point-min) (point-max)))

should tell you the same for overlays.
