Please tell how you tried to set the face's :weight.

If you change "Weight" via customize-face, does it also fail to work?
And does that font have a bold variant on your system? If so, can you
tell what is its numeric value of the :weight attribute?
Added tag(s) moreinfo.

It turns out that the Monaco font on my system is damaged in some way.
It shows a variant for 'bold' in the Font Book utility, but validating
that font in Font Book shows it is invalid.
Sorry for the noise.
