Open the root of any remote host in tramp, like so:

  C-x C-f /scp:root <at> emerald:/

Tramp will complain:

  tramp-error: ‘tramp_readlink_file_truename /’ does not return a valid Lisp expression: ‘""/

Indeed, this is a regression, introduced with commit
9ed5c39aad09571314097be91cb28e7504614421. Fixed in master.
