Here's a workaround:

    (defun spw/gnus-summary-exit (&rest _ignore)
      (call-process "notmuch" nil nil nil "new" "--no-hooks")
      (with-current-buffer gnus-group-buffer
        (gnus-group-get-new-news t)))
    (advice-add 'gnus-summary-exit :after #'spw/gnus-summary-exit)
