I have no idea what all the reasons for these changes I noticed in either 23.1 or 23.1.92 are. But here is a users opinion on them. When you have people using emacs the new versions shouldn't change anything. They are setup to do a job and need to continue on without spending a day figuring out what new items to disable. Many people are setup by someone else and they don't have a clue as to how to fix it. So their setup person has to spend time with them to sort it out. Advertise the new stuff in NEWS and let people enable it if they want. some of the things that I caught right away mail-mode versus message mode colors ( can't see them good because of the colors I have set) message mail send slower mail not put in FCC file babyl format to mbox format split left/right versus top/bottom I assume ther are more but I went back to 22.3 In GNU Emacs 23.1.92.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.12.6) of 2010-02-09 on zephyr Windowing system distributor `The X.Org Foundation', version 11.0.60802000 configured using `configure '--prefix=/tools/wdtgnu/emacs-23.1.92' '--disable-nls'' Important settings: value of $LC_ALL: nil value of $LC_COLLATE: C value of $LC_CTYPE: nil value of $LC_MESSAGES: nil value of $LC_MONETARY: nil value of $LC_NUMERIC: nil value of $LC_TIME: nil value of $LANG: C value of $XMODIFIERS: nil locale-coding-system: nil default enable-multibyte-characters: t Major mode: Lisp Interaction Minor modes in effect: tooltip-mode: t mouse-wheel-mode: t tool-bar-mode: t menu-bar-mode: t file-name-shadow-mode: t global-font-lock-mode: t font-lock-mode: t blink-cursor-mode: t auto-encryption-mode: t auto-compression-mode: t line-number-mode: t transient-mark-mode: t Recent input: g SPC a n SPC e m a i l SPC t a k e s SPC m u c h SPC l o n g SPC t h e m n SPC p r e v i o u s SPC e m a c s SPC v e r s i o n e m a c s - 2 3 . 1 . 9 2 SPC - Q c - x SPC m f i l l SPC i n SPC T O ; o : SPC t o SPC b e SPC m y U s e r N a m e c - c SPC c - c O I t SPC t a k e s SPC a SPC f e w SPC s e c o n d s SPC t o SPC s e n d SPC t h i s SPC e m a i l SPC v e r s u s SPC a l m o s t SPC i n s t a n t l y SPC SPC i n SPC p r e v i o u s SPC e m a c s SPC v e r s i o n s . This is bug#5558. > mail not put in FCC file This is bug#5555. > babyl format to mbox format Hopefully you can agree it is better in the long-run for Rmail to use a more standard format like mbox. It would have been nice if Rmail could still handle Babyl as well, but there was no-one to do the work of making it support two formats. > split left/right versus top/bottom This is a new feature which some modes still don't expect and so it can cause some issues. It should only happen for wide frames. (setq split-width-threshold nil) should make it go away.
