Subject: 23.1; rmail-mime not decoding attachments
Date: Tue, 9 Feb 2010 13:58:05 -0800
I just updated to emacs-23.1 and my RMAIL has been converted to mbox
format. I have been using the etach.el patch and M-X detach quite
successfully. It seems to have quit working in this version.

In using M-X rmail-mime it fails to properly decode attachments that
work successfully with etach.el

Is there work being done to enhance the functionality of rmail-mime? How
can I get the failing messages to someone?

It's already been done, and Emacs 23.2 (not yet released) should do
better. Can you try the pretest from

http://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/pretest/emacs-23.1.92.tar.gz

(You cmay be able to just use the file rmailmm.el from that version
with 23.1, but I haven't checked that.)

Or try the Emacs Bazaar trunk, see

http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/emacs/

I built 23.1.92 and it does decode the emails I had better then 23.1

If a html block is in an email it doesn't take that into a file where
etach did. It was handy in that you could then have etach execute
firefox on the html captured in the file.

Does rmail-mime support clicking on the decoded attachments and running
an application on them?

This is back to you only as I am not sure where to send it. Also not
sure if it is the alpha or just 23.1.

One other thing is why does the screen split left/right versus
top/bottom when you send email in a full window. Same thing for the
rmail colors changing. It is very disconcerting. After 20 years the
default operation should stay the same. If new things are added they
should be enabled by the user and not affect old users. This type of
changing causes more moaning from users then most any other thing.

Then I also notice C-x m allows multiple emails to be started. I think
this is nice but not sure if I wouldn't lose some of them.

The big thing is c-c c-c sending an email takes forever compared to
22.3. Is that going to be fixed?

I don't understand. Can you explain exactly what you want to be able
to do, preferably with an example email?

No, it just lets you save them.

Always to the bug address, please. (I resent your message there so no
need for you to do so.)

Try setting split-width-threshold to nil.

> Same thing for the rmail colors changing. It is very disconcerting.

This is probably due to message-mode being used rather than mail-mode
(see my reply to your other report).

If this still happens in 23.1.92, please make a separate bug report
using M-x report-emacs-bug, showing exactly what to do starting from
`emacs -Q'.
