As per [0], the last chunk of 0 bytes is always accompanied by a last CRLF that signals the end of the message: chunked-body = *chunk last-chunk trailer-part CRLF ^ this one chunk = chunk-size [ chunk-ext ] CRLF chunk-data CRLF chunk-size = 1*HEXDIG last-chunk = 1*("0") [ chunk-ext ] CRLF chunk-data = 1*OCTET ; a sequence of chunk-size octets `url-http-chunked-encoding-after-change-function' is able to process (and remove) that terminator IF AVAILABLE in the buffer when processing the response, however it won't wait for it if it's not yet there. In other words: | Bottom of the response buffer | Bottom of the full response | | (visible to url-http) | (to be delivered to Emacs) | | ------------------------------+-----------------------------| | 0\r\n | 0\r\n | | | \r\n | If the last chunk is processed when the bottom of the response buffer is as above (note that the whole response has not yet been delivered to Emacs), url-http will call the user callback without waiting for the final terminator to be read from the socket. This is normally not an issue when doing one-shot requests, but it's problematic when the connection is reused immediately. As there are 2 bytes from the request N that have not been dealt with, they'll be considered as part of the response of the request N+1. On top, it turns out that when processing the headers of request N+1, `url-http-wait-for-headers-change-function' will consider the request a "headerless malformed response" (due to the leading \r\n) delivering it broken to the caller. I'm attaching a patch that I've got applied locally that prevents the problem from happening by implementing an extra state in which `url-http-chunked-encoding-after-change-function` properly waits for the very last element of the message. Unfortunately my copyright papers are stuck on the FSF for months now so I'm unable to submit a patch directly myself so feel free to use the attached diff as a PoC to illustrate the nature of the problem and a possible fix. A more experienced Elisp developer will surely find a more elegant solution. Please note that the patch sits on top of the emacs-28 branch. For additional context, this bug was found when debugging magit/ghub (see [1] for details). Hope this helps. The patch looks good to me, so I've pushed it to Emacs 29. This change was small enough to apply without assigning copyright to the FSF, but for future patches you want to submit, it might make sense to get the paperwork started now, so that subsequent patches can be applied speedily. Would you be willing to sign such paperwork? -- (domestic pets only, the antidote for overdose, milk.) bloggy blog: http://lars.ingebrigtsen.no From debbugs-submit-bounces@debbugs.gnu.org Sun Apr 17 07:01:07 2022 Received: (at control) by debbugs.gnu.org; 17 Apr 2022 11:01:07 +0000 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]:35066 helo=debbugs.gnu.org) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1ng2eQ-00053K-PV for submit@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 17 Apr 2022 07:01:07 -0400 Received: from quimby.gnus.org ([95.216.78.240]:41604) by debbugs.gnu.org with esmtp (Exim 4.84_2) (envelope-from ) id 1ng2eP-0004wc-8k for control@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 17 Apr 2022 07:01:05 -0400 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; q=dns/txt; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gnus.org; s=20200322; h=Subject:From:To:Message-Id:Date:Sender:Reply-To:Cc: MIME-Version:Content-Type:Content-Transfer-Encoding:Content-ID: Content-Description:Resent-Date:Resent-From:Resent-Sender:Resent-To:Resent-Cc :Resent-Message-ID:In-Reply-To:References:List-Id:List-Help:List-Unsubscribe: List-Subscribe:List-Post:List-Owner:List-Archive; bh=mdKPkD0DjpVoq2Pes/CZNfMmiEmkKX1sfHCKEkP4dBU=; b=piT7fXson7lUSPz8x8pRsDXP2Y 3ErYVGkfKO4AqthHF7nwa1d/EWp1ZPLxLdzxQwo0OwYn1NH1wFI0n9TNe/MMcDHP8vCHL7JDudrez sfELsnc+fd3zQKT5dn971aZC1w4KmVvXzgOvl8nQytZIfEEe3w5IQemVA3dvbtsmaF3k=; Received: from [84.212.220.105] (helo=xo) by quimby.gnus.org with esmtpsa (TLS1.3:ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:256) (Exim 4.92) (envelope-from ) id 1ng2eH-0004CB-8a for control@debbugs.gnu.org; Sun, 17 Apr 2022 13:00:59 +0200 Date: Sun, 17 Apr 2022 13:00:56 +0200 Message-Id: <87ee1was9j.fsf@gnus.org> To: control@debbugs.gnu.org From: Lars Ingebrigtsen Subject: control message for bug #54989 X-Spam-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "quimby.gnus.org", has NOT identified this incoming email as spam. Would you be willing to sign such paperwork? I'd love to. I started the process one year ago (20th April 2021 to be exact) and it's been most of the time stuck on the FSF side since then. I've sent pings in November 2021, January 2022 and March 2022 to copyright-clerk@fsf.org but nobody has replied. I'll send a query about what's up. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Any news you might have please feel free to send me an e-mail. BTW, here's a patch for your consideration. It's related to the diff I initially sent, that's why I'm bothering you again over here. Nothing big, just some cosmetics. --=-=-= Content-Type: text/x-patch Content-Disposition: inline; filename="0001-Unify-local-variable-initialisation.patch" >From 5c1c53a0969b07d1487a9751b8849a1818680cb7 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Nacho Barrientos Date: Mon, 18 Apr 2022 11:04:55 +0200 Subject: [PATCH] Unify local variable initialisation Treat url-http-chunked-last-crlf-missing as any other buffer variable by declaring and initialising it the same way as the other related ones. --- lisp/url/url-http.el | 6 ++++-- 1 file changed, 4 insertions(+), 2 deletions(-) diff --git a/lisp/url/url-http.el b/lisp/url/url-http.el index 7f55866eec..b950a8994f 100644 --- a/lisp/url/url-http.el +++ b/lisp/url/url-http.el @@ -36,7 +36,7 @@ (defvar url-current-object) (defvar url-http-after-change-function) (defvar url-http-chunked-counter) -(defvar url-http-chunked-last-crlf-missing nil) +(defvar url-http-chunked-last-crlf-missing) (defvar url-http-chunked-length) (defvar url-http-chunked-start) (defvar url-http-connection-opened) @@ -1163,7 +1163,7 @@ the end of the document."
