Using bec806e from yesterday, I cannot reproduce on Ubuntu.  The invokation

    guix shell -C -E DSISPLAy -E TERM emacs --  emacs -nw

works for me.  I suspect something wrong with your environment
variables.  Maybe you could run "guix shell --check".
